Oud Perfume: A Beginner's Guide for Pakistani Buyers
Oud is the most expensive raw material in perfumery and the most misunderstood. If you've only encountered it as a wall of smoke at a wedding, you'd be forgiven for thinking it isn't for you.
It usually is. You just met the wrong one.
What oud actually is
Oud — also called agarwood or oudh — comes from the Aquilaria tree. When the tree is infected by a particular mould, it produces a dark, fragrant resin as a defence. That resinous wood is oud.
It takes decades to form, only a small fraction of wild trees develop it, and the resulting oil has historically sold for more per gram than gold. This is why genuine oud fragrances cost what they do.
The smell is difficult to describe because it isn't one thing. Depending on origin and age it can read as woody, leathery, sweet, animalic, smoky, or faintly medicinal — often several at once.
Why oud matters in Pakistan
Oud isn't a trend here. It's woven into weddings, Eid, Friday prayers and formal occasions across South Asia and the Gulf. Wearing oud signals a certain seriousness — it isn't a casual daytime scent.
It's also a cold-weather material. In peak summer humidity, a heavy oud becomes overwhelming within minutes. Save it for shaadi season and winter evenings.
The mistakes beginners make
Starting with the heaviest one. Traditional dense ouds are an acquired taste. Begin with something softened by florals or fruit.
Overspraying. Oud has enormous projection. One spray, sometimes two. If you can smell yourself strongly after ten minutes, you've used too much.
Wearing it at the wrong time. Oud in a hot office at 2pm reads as inconsiderate. The same scent at a winter wedding reads as expensive.
Judging in the first five minutes. Oud develops for hours. The opening is often the harshest part.
How to choose your first oud
Think of oud fragrances along a spectrum from soft to intense.
Start here: Noble Oud
Pure oud at the centre, but softened with creamy white florals — jasmine and lily — so it never turns harsh. Bergamot, cardamom and saffron lift the opening; amber, musk and sandalwood wrap the finish.
This is the easiest oud to wear and the one we recommend if you've never owned one. Light enough that it also works on cooler summer evenings.
Longevity: 9–11 hours. Sillage: medium.
Something different: Royal Oud
Oud from an unexpected angle. It opens on passionfruit and citrus — bright, almost juicy, which is not where most oud fragrances begin. Agarwood and delicate florals build the heart, then amber, musk and vanilla close it.
Modern and unusual. Good if you already own a traditional oud and want something that turns heads differently. The fruity opening also makes it more summer-tolerant than most.
Longevity: 10–12 hours. Limited edition.
The classic: Eternal Oud
Rose and oud — the pairing that has defined Middle Eastern perfumery for centuries. Saffron and a bright, jammy rose open it; deep agarwood underneath gives it weight so the rose reads rich rather than sweet. Patchouli, amber and sandalwood carry the dry-down.
The heaviest of the three and the most traditional. Strictly a winter and wedding fragrance.
Longevity: 11–13 hours — expect it on your clothing the next day.
How to wear oud properly
- One spray to start. Add a second only after twenty minutes if you genuinely can't detect it.
- Neck and wrists, not clothes. Oud can stain light fabric, and it develops better on warm skin.
- Give it an hour. The opening is the sharpest part. What people compliment is the dry-down.
- Cool weather and evenings. Weddings, dinners, formal occasions, winter.
- Don't layer it with another strong fragrance. Oud doesn't need help.
